The Siege of Delhi, 1857 by Alfred Pearse (PC) The Siege of Delhi was one of the key battles during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Delhi had been captured by the rebels on the 11th of May, with a lot of the civilians inside the city joining the rebel mob. The city was determined to be too well fortified and too strongly held to be attacked overtly, so a siege was devised.The siege lasted from June to September before a frontal assault took place, led by a large bombardment of the city. Ultimately the city was re-captured on the 21st of September 1857. Taken from the original book plates published in 1901. |

Charge and Pursue by Mark Churms. The Queens Bays engage enemy foot and horse outside Luknow, led by Major Percy Smith. The regiment was given the order to charge and pursue. The Bays thundered into action accompanied by the second Punjab cavalry. In the action Major Percy Smith was killed along with two corporals. |

The 78th Highlanders at Lucknow by Stanley Wood. (B) Soldiers from the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot provide relief during the Siege of Lucknow. Indian soldiers from the East India Company broke into open rebellion on the 30th of May 1857. They would siege the entrenched British garrison in Lucknow, leading to bloody fighting that lasted months. The first siege of Lucknow lasted 87 days and the second siege lasted a further 61 days. Ultimately the British forces would evacuate on the 19th of November. |
